I love my boyfriend with all my heart, but my mom, sister, aunt and some of my friends don't think he is good for me. I have been in my relationship for almost three years and we live together. Now we are considering purchasing a house together. He is very optimistic and assertive when it comes to his point of view, but I kind of like that about him. He has very interesting ideas and concerns and really has what is best for us in mind. I feel like my mom, sis, and friends don't understand him like I do because they don't see him on a daily basis like I do. He is very sensitive when it comes to his feelings. Both my mom and him like to be in control of a situation so they bash heads a lot. Is anyone in a similar situation?

If he loved you, he would have married you. Obviously he doesn't have YOUR best interest in mind- just his. He gets a pretend wife without any responsibilities. How is that "best" for you? Doesn't it make you wonder why all the people who love you and are closest to you don't like him? Shouldn't you think about that while you're paying half the rent, cleaning the house, cooking for him and listening to him tell you what's "best" for you?

I wonder why your family feel like they do? Are you supporting him financially? If he is not prepared to get married I definitely would not buy a house together if I were you. If he has what is best for you in mind, then he will want to marry you. Maybe your family have seen you change since you have been with him and feel like you are pushed into stuff by him. Mothers who are strongly protective can get dominating too and you need to make your own choices BUT if there are several people who love you that feel like that then I would be very very cautious. After all they will be the ones there for you if it falls to pieces.

While your family may be wrong about him, stop and try to objectively consider their viewpoint. My husband ignored the advice from family and friends before he married his first wife and he found out the hard way that he should've listened. She was controlling, demeaning, selfish, cruel and adulterous. Even worse she verbally and emotionally abused their child.

It's been more than 10 years since their divorce, but we are still dealing with the repercussions. We are bound to her - more like held hostage - by a joint custody agreement. She is vengeful and petty and makes everything difficult. My 16-year-old stepdaughter has never had a relationship with her and wants to live with us full time. Her mom completely ignores her feelings and won't allow it. We're awaiting the light at the end of the tunnel - when my stepdaughter turns 18 and can walk away from her mother and our ties with the ex-wife are finally severed.

I think that you can listen to your family but the ultimate decisons lies in your hand. Your family might perceive him one way and you might perceive him another way. You are the one that has to date him not them, so don't disregard what they have to say just consider what they are saying bc sometimes outsiders see things about our relationships that we are blind to see (mostly due to love).

It is your life. You have to make your own decisions. You're family will come around once they realize you're serious.
