I have been to HAwaii three or four times. When you arrive in Hawaii look for the free booklets in the airport which describe the activities on the island and have coupons for tours and gifts. The booklets also contain maps and guides, lists of attractions, bus routes and fares, and lists of restaurants and shopping establishments. If you cannot find them in the airport, they will also be available in news racks on the street, in hotel lobbies and in some shops. There will be a booklet for each island with the title Maui Today, or Oahu Today, etc.

The top things to do in Hawaii are:

Go to Pearl Harbor to see history at the US Arizona Memorial. You can drive or take the bus there; no need to book a tour. But you need to go early because the site is popular and the wait for your free tour can be about an hour. In Waikiki you can browse around the International Market across from Waikiki Beach, go on a sunset dinner cruise on Waikiki bay, try an outrigger canoe ride on Waikiki, go for a sail on a catamaran on Waikiki Bay, or visit Diamond Head park. If you like to snorkel go to Hanauma Bay which has perfect flat water for snorkeling on a reef.

Go to the other side of the island to see the great deserted beaches (get a rental car for a day or two). Take highway 99 north toward Waimea and stop at the Dole pineapple plantation for a tour.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is a great place to learn about authentic Hawaiian life. But understand that its run by the Morman church and there are NO alcoholic beverages served there, not even beer. You can buy tickets to tour the place, and another type ticket that allows you to stay for the evening luau.

Go to a Luau. Paradise cove is a good one.

If you can afford it take a tour to anotehr island, like Maui or the big island. You can arrange tours through one of the many tour companies. I have used Roberts tours a couple times.

If you go to Maui, you gotta do the downhill bike ride. I don't recommend the sunrise one because you have to get up at 3:00 AM to get started up the mountain and its cold up there that early. If you are a romantic do it, but otherwise no. There are different bike companies and some don't take you all the way to the top, and some don't guide you back down. You can come down by yourself, there's only one road with just a little traffic, but if you are squeamish about riding in the street, a company that accompanies you down will help watch the traffic for you. I have been twice and prefer Maui Downhill to the others. These companies have web sites They will pick you up at your hotel, take you to their shop to pick out a wet-suit (for the cold and mist/rain shower maybe) and gloves and helmet; then take you up the mountain; then follow your group down so they can block traffic for your ride; then afterwards take you back to your hotel. Expect this activity to take 75-80% or more of the day.

If you go to Maui, the Road to Hana is a great drive (you need a rental car). It’s a 45 mile winding road that takes 4 hours to drive. Its like driving through the jungle; has a bunch of one lane bridges. Then drive past Hana to the Seven-Pools attraction and go for a swim.

Best Luau - Paradise Cove

Things to do:

Kewala Basin (about 1/4 mile from Ala Moana Shopping Center) - all kinds of water sports from para-sailing to snorkeling off sail boats

U.S.S. Arizona - Pearl Harbor

Shopping - Ala Moana Shopping Center, Aloha Bowl Swap meet (Wed, Sat, Sun), International Marketplace

Hike to the top of Diamond Head (take water and go to the bathroom first - bring a flashlight for the tunnels - use sunscreen - go early it gets warm)

Polynesian Cultural Center

Sunset Beach (at sunset of course)

Surfing lessons (Waikiki Beach)

Waikiki Beach (not my favorite beach) lots of fun to people watch - fun to walk around the area - check out Hilton Hawaiian Village on Friday night - they have a Polynesian show and fireworks

Paradise Cove Luau

A must do/see that many tourists overlook is going to the north shore. It is beautiful just driving over to it and also nice to stop by the towns. In general, the best things to do is to go outside of Waikiki, especially if you really want to experience the Oahu and if you want to save money. For good Hawaiian food, go to Ono's (726 Kapahulu Ave). Zippy's is also a good place to eat. But go to the one on King street or in Kahala. Curry house is also delicious.

we went to oahu and here are the things that we seen and they were all great!

-Pearl Harbor & Missouri Battleship - They were awesome and very well worth the time.
-Haenama Bay - Snorkling - it was fun! there were tons of fish and it was just beautiful there.
-International Market Place - Tons of shopping they had everything there and it was reasonably priced as well.
-Swap Meet - its a huge flee market at the Aloha Stadium and it costs three dollars to get in but they have everything imaginable there and its all cheaply priced too.
-Dole Plantation & North Shore Tour - it was very interesting and the Dole Plantation has some of the prettiest gardens i have ever seen.
-Sea Life Park - we went and spent a day there and did their laua. I dont recommend their laua, the food wasnt very good. We heard that Gerrmaines was a good one to go to for what it cost. but sea life park had alot of sea animals and awesome dolphin show as well as a sea lion show too.
-Waikiki Beach - it was fun just to go to the beach and sit around.
-Dukes - its a restraunt right on the beach and it was great!!
-A Restraunt in the Pacific Beach Hotel has a buffet of Crab Legs and Prime Rib plus ALOT of other stuff and its reasonably priced too. Also, they have a three story aquarium that you may be interested in checking out while you are in the Waikiki Area.
-Hilo Hatties is also a fun store to look in. They are the store of the Hawaii Islands and its just interesting to look in.

Hope these ideas help you out. Have fun!! its a blast over there, but the plane ride is very long!!!!

Saw an article on MSNBC that may interest you. Not quite on point but an ex-locals take on being back on Oahu.

Also check out the 'Revealed' series of books by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. They have written one for each of the main hawaii islands. Get the one for Oahu at Barnes & Noble or your favorite book store.
