I have to think of an idea for a term project in a parallel computing course. I have some ideas in mind, but thought I would take suggestions from people that might know more about computing and maybe come up with something better.

It should be something that is possible for one person to complete within a month or so. Also, the subject must involve parallel computer architecture in some way.

Thanks!

Sheesh. That sounds hard. I know DARPA is working on quantum computing. Is that the same thing? Quatnum is where all solutions are tried at once using the quantum states of the constituent atoms, then all states collapse somehow to the correct answer.

But, man, that stuff is so out there. We're talking about computer architecture that will not be mainstream for at least 10 to 15 years.

Anyway, sorry, can't help. I grew up in the same neighborhood with Vint Cerf. Too bad we're not in touch, I could hook you up with Vint, and he would know.

Ah, SETI at home -- is that parallel computing? So, that's a complex problem that can be split into chunks and worked on simultaneously by many processors at the same time.

How about DNA/RNA sequencing where the nucleotides can be chopped into smaller strings?

My brother does this kind of work. Send me your e-mail, and I will forward to him -- see if he has time to help you.

Run some kind of program on computers in a network.
They would communicate with each other via TCP/IP.

Then, each computer would take part in solving a portion of a more complex problem.
