Hi Ross...when cats purr it mostly means they are contented or happy, however cats will also purr when they are very ill to help aid in the healing process as when they are dying. The reasons are not only psychological but also physiological.

Cats purr for a lot of reasons, happiness, stress, fear...it just depends on the situation.

Cats do purr when they are content but they also purr when they are seriously ill or injured. When I worked in a vet clinic cats would come in attacked by dogs or run over by cars and would be purring. Made me cry everytime.

yes its a sign of contentment,if you watch a kitten as it suckles its mum it will purr as well as moving its paws
