Patrick Lynch, the president of the New York City Patrolmens Benevolent Association, says that New York Police Deparment starting salaries are too low. Police officers start out at $ 25,000 a year and the top salary is $ 54,000. Do you agree that those salaries are too low, considering how expensive New York City's cost of living is?

yes...here in chicago the starting salary is over 43,000 n it can go as high as 76,000 after bout 15 yrs of work

As an officer....there is no question officers across the nation have extremely low pay scales.
The profession has dramatically changed over the years just as our communities have.
Police, like firefighters, nurses, and other public services have historically been underpaid!
Pretty sad! Bet those who need the services of law enforcement, fire, or medical would "pony" up the dollars if their lives were in danger in a "new york" minute!

All things considered that is a pretty good pay for starting out. They get overtime and full benefits. Civil service professions and teachers traditionally got lower wages because of the benefits and retirement packages.
Lynch is bringing this up because the city has a budget surplus of over $1 billion and he wants his share.

In Texas, teachers' salaries finally topped police salaries 2 years ago.

Here in America we let the free market decide salaries. If salaries are too low then NYC won't be able to fill those positions. Obviously if NYC is able to hire the officers it needs then the salary is not too low.
