More money and opportunity for advancement. I didn't have a PHD, so there was a hard ceiling for my career in a science lab, so I went for an MBA and got a great career in front office management. It worked out better for me.

Similar to stevers1, I was an R&D manager for 10 years and felt the "hard ceiling" due to the missing PhD. So I went into (operational) Management (electronic manufacturing). Great advancement within 5 years onto The Board, an obviously good money.
But quite frankly, I often regretted my move, because instead of daily politics, knife throwing and scheming, I miss the sense of achievement, the pride of having created something usful, seeing people in the street using "my idea"...!

Managers get paid a lot more, and they don't really have to know much of anything as long as they can lie, kiss all the right butts, and have no qualms about prostituting themselves on a daily basis.
