The pool is set into a large deck. This will leave a very large hole in the middle of it. Does anybody have any cool ideas for the new space other than just adding more boards and leaving it blank?

how about a step-down fire pit with bench-type seating? there are lots of safe fire containers on the market - sittin around a fire with friends or family is relaxing.

First you need to develope a nice seed bed. One method is to simply rake the surface soil with a metal rake, several times over, until you get about 1-2" of fine seedbed. Scatter the grass seed unsparingly leaving no bare patch, and the rake it in. When the seed is about 2" tall roll it with a fairly heavy roller. If your weather is dry you will of course have watered the seeds after sowing. Otherwise you will need to cut up the surface to create a fine tilth, and then do as I suggest above. After rolling, water nightly until the grass is established. Germination period for grass seed is 10 days

Put wire fencing around the inside of the deck to enclose the sunken space. Buy a pet alligator, and keep him in the pit. Charge people to watch you feed him.
Very Cool!
Or, put a thatched roof over the opening, and viola, sunken tiki bar.

Put in an in-ground pool!!!! Or maybe make a cool rock garden, or a pond with fishies in it
