I am looking to purchase solid wood furniture. However, the wording in many online descriptions is rather vague. Could you list a few phrases commonly used, which would indicate that the furniture is not solid wood. Thank you!

A composite is something that is made of little pieces. In furniture, it is either sawdust or wood chips, or similar items, that are held together with something that is like a glue.

Oak veneer is an extremely thin slice of real oak that is glued onto a lesser wood or wood product. Plywood is a great example. Now days, they also do that to particle board, not just plywood.

It is hard to find products that do not contain composits or veneer. You would not want solid wood in some places because it warps too easily. It is also virtually impossible to cut enough wood from a tree to make very part of every piece of furniture solid hard wood.

I am fine with veneer because of this. Personally, I equate particle board, chip board, etc. with cheap, low class products. I know that it is used in almost everything now, but that is why I only buy antique items and fix them up.

Most furniture these days is made up of composition materials covered in a veneer or laminate. Composite material can be made from wood shavings, saw dust, tree bark, and just about anything else they can grind up, add glue, and flatten into a sheet. Anything that is made from "solid" wood will usually say so, everything else is a composite.

I;m guessing, pressboard, balsam wood etc.. the wood composition is a mix of saw dust, cheap wood and glue to form wood(like in walmart versions of tv cabinets or computer desks) oak veneer is a covering out of thin plastic that is covered(painted) to look like oak. best of luck, hope i helped somehow.

It means its not real wood solid wood. It's particle board covered with thin sheets (veneers) of wood.

wood composition is still vague (is pressboard wood?) so ask the sales rep what they mean exactly.

oak vaneer means that the 1/64 th of an inch that actually shows is oak glued onto the "wood" underneath.
