A friend recently got aesthetician's license. To build clientele she's offerred friends deep discounts on services--I've gotten peels, facials and eyelash extensions, and discounts on most products.

For example, the eyelash extensions retail at $250 for the 1st application; she did it for $80. I tipped her $80. I've gotten lash fill-ins for $50, tipping her $50 each time.

A facial peel that retailed at $349, she charged me only for the cost of the products she used, $40. I tipped her $85.

The dilemma: She sold me a liquid silicone product to paint on the lash extensions to make them last longer. It made them fall off. She advised me to use less, I did, same thing. I said I wanted to return the product. She reluctantly said she would, but the $60 would come out of her pocket, and that no one else was having a problem. I didn't return it. A couple of months later she told me that the stuff was a problem for everyone and not to use it.

My question: Would you return the product?

Absolutely...it's simply a matter of a bad product (she told everyone not to use it, eventually). I would return it, you have been a dedicated customer of hers, and she shouldn't have any problems with you returning a faulty item/product - that's business. She should have been aware of these potential problems before getting into it. These things happen and it is all part of running an establishment. Granted, she has been lenient with you as far as her cost of services, but you have been generous and fair with your tips, she should return the favor.

Ugh. Tough situation. I'd actually return it to her and let the $60 come out of her pocket...WITH the promise that you'd continue to come to her for services and continue to tip well.

She's in an extremely good position by having a friend like you who is tipping her these off the charts amounts! I think she'd understand you bringing the ineffective item back because others had the same problem with the product. Even though you're friends - you need to be clear that you'll only pay for & keep items that work! Promising to still be a client & wonderful tipper will keep her happy. Don't even worry about the $60 she'll have to eat. :)

Hope this helps an ugly situation!

I guess I would understand that it came out of her pocket and not return the product BUT I would cut back on the tips for the next few services until you felt you two were "even". She probably won't even notice and you'll feel better... you are giving her awesome tips, so $10 here and there will still make them more than generous.

You might want to make her aware of your plan, that way she understands that you are cranky about it but you understand that her budget it tight and you don't want to lose a friendship over something so silly.

I would return the product and get the money back. She has deceived you by waiting so long to tell you the product causes problems for others too.
I avoid doing business with close friends and family because it's great when things work out but if there is a problem it's more difficult dealing with them than with someone you don't know personally.

I would return it since she said it ended up being a problem for everyone and not to use it. Tell her to return it to wherever she bought it.
But if it is going to interfere with your relationship keep it, is $60 worth your friendship? Plus you have ben getting huge discounts so it all evens out. Actually you are still ahead either way!

No. Take it as a life lesson about buying from friends in addition to taking discounts from friends.

With as much money as you state she discounted you I wouldn't worry about sixty bucks.
