Start with your family first and get as much information as you can. Then you can go to libraries anywhere and find research books on; eg, shipping arrivals, early settlers, etc.

I have done family history for 22 years and have not spent a lot of money on it. You may have a family history group in your area or near by that could assist you as well. There is always the internet, do searches for everything (genealogical groups, family history groups, surname, address, arrivals, census) anything you can think of.

Always be carefull not to take information seriously as sometimes it is only as good as the person's memory that is telling it. But all information can be of some assistance or the real story, which can help in obtaining more or further information.

Hey Butterfly,

There are hundreds of free sites now on the internet. Before going there, think about what you want to do. Do you want to plot out a family tree? For $30 dollars you can buy excellent software that will even give you time on the Pay sites, for free. That software can be used to organize your search. Start with you, input all the information you have, and then you have your parents tied to you by your birth. The software tracks all the connections, and can show you at a glance what areas of your family tree you have not worked on, etc.

So, I put some sites for software first. Even some free software.

Then you can use Vital Record sites to find Birth, Marriage and Death records that will help you to know dates and names of the parents the certificate is for. Buy finding BMD Vital Records, you will be able to show all of your family how everyone is related.

As another person said, Cindi's list is great. It can be overwhelming just like the internet and the thousands of places. So, if you find a couple of trusted sites, those can act as your foundation tools. The LDS Family Search site should be one of those foundation sites, they tie into the Social Security Death records for the USA, and have records internationally as well. Then SSA itself can be great. Ellis Island is free, but you have to register. GENFORUM is Outstanding, there may be a FORUM for each surname you are interested in. Also, included below are some sites that have excellent references to Genealogy data.

If you want to start out with your family tree you can go to the LDS (not RLDS) website http://www.familysearch.org
or contact an LDS family history center in your area to help you. You DO NOT have to be a member of the LDS church to use this service.
