A dog should be at least 2 years of age before being bred! And also BEFORE being bred should have a health check up and hip xray. Why are you wanting to bred your dog! Is your dog a Grand Champion and will it better the breed.
There are way to many back yard breeders!! Leave the breeding up to the people who can look at a dog and decide if it is breed quality!! If it is not of high standards you are only breeding more pet quality dogs and more unwanted animals. Please do not become one of these people!!!
Before you breed your dog should Have the vet checks, hips xrayed and have a health cert. Then you should feed her HIGH QUALITY puppy food for 1 month prior to breeding to help her bulk up a little before the puppies drain her. then feed her puppy food the whole time she is pregnant and while nursing. This dose not mean going to the grocery store it mean HIgh Quality food from a vet or pet store! The puppy's will need to have shots and a check up before going to a new home and this can all add up to allot of money!
It is way cheaper to spay your pet! Please think about it then walk through the animal shelter and see all the dogs in there!! they are all there because of people who said "I want them to have a litter before I get her fixed' Or "I want my children to the the miracle of birth" PLEASE SPAY YOUR PET!!!!!

no dog should be bred until after her second heat, she should really be at 2 years of age.
I did post how to age a dog some time ago and this is the reason why, it will give you a baseline for comparison to dog to human years.
we always say that if you need to ask such a question, your reasons for breeding are purely financial and as such it would not be in the interests of either the dog, the breed or indeed society if you went ahead with your plans. look at puppy farms, and rescue centres globally, do you really need to breed your dog to enjoy her wonderful nature, her devotion, her loyalty ?
Breeding dogs can kill them they suffer from pyometra and breast cancer please think and then have her spayed if you cannot devote at least 19 hours a day for 12 weeks this is how long we devote when we have a litter and we are regarded as the best in the UK.....

You shouldn't breed an animal until they're at least 1 1/2 - 2 years old.

Is she from parents that are within Standard?
Did she come from a reputable breeder?
Were her parents health tested?
Has she been temperment tested?
Are you aware of the health issue that affect your breed?
Do you plan to do health testing/screening on your female before you breed her, and require the same of the male?
These are just a few things to ask yourself. If you've answered "NO" to any of these, I would not recommend breeding.
A female should not be bred before she is at least 2 yrs old and basic as well as breed specific health testing is done.

If you don't know the answer to that simple (For a knowledgeable breeder) question, then you shouldn't breed...
Is your dog a champion? Does she come from champion lines? Does she have her health, eye and hip certifications? Does she conform to her breed standard? If not, then spay her rather than becoming yet another backyard breeder.

No female dog should be bred prior to her 2 nd birthday and only then IF she' has been genetically tested and evaluated by a show judge and deemed an outstanding example of the breed standard.

After the dog tunrs 2 years old and has and OFA rating done and any other tests that are needed for her breed and you have a CH in front of her name you are good to go.
Before that you are just adding to the overpopulation of puppys.

Well, if you have to ask this question, dont even bother with breeding, you obviously have no idea at all what you are doing.
