I am about to start work as an Interpreter/Translator, self-employed. Do I have to reg. for VAT?

As an Interpreter/Translator the answer is no

That depends on whether or not you are going to charge VAT to your clients, and your company status and the amountof income you are going to turn over. If you are going to turn over more than £63000 you have to register for VAT when you reach that threhold. If you are no going to turn over this much, I suggest you don't register. Dave.

no as you will be not selling vat goods just giving yourself a wage means pay tax and national insurance contributions

You have to register for VAT on everything you do. It envolves the taxes and Revenue.
