You can pack it in your checked bag, but I wouldn't do that. If you've ever seen how baggage claim clerks handle baggage, you'd know that this kind of treatment can damage or destroy an expensive piece of equipment like a laptop. It'll probably also get searched.
Three years ago I brought a Palm Pilot with me to Mexico. I checked it in my bag. When I got to the hotel and unpacked, I noticed that my bag had been rather messily searched. They took the batteries out of the back of the PDA, causing me to lose the data that was on it, making it useless for the trip. Fortunately I synched before I left and could restore when I got home, but all the books I had stored weren't there. They also broke the plastic cover (yes, it was an old Palm III, but it still worked, and yes, I still have it).
So, keep carrying that equipment on with you.

Yes, you can. However, I"d be extremely cautious and reluctant to do so with my own computer.
If you check it, you have to pack it up to safeguard against being under a lot of weight and your luggage possibly being thrown around, dropped and etc.
You also have to hope that whoever handles your luggage is an honest individual and that they don't go through your bag and steal the computer. Or, just steal / lose your luggage.
Whenever I've flown with my most treasured objects (my computer and 35 mm camera and expensive lenses) I always made sure to carry on with me. I didn't care how bulky or heavy the carry on was or if it even bothered other passengers taking up space on the shelf. Because even if the luggage is properly insured and you do everything the right way, I'm pretty sure that if something were to happen to your property, it would take forever to resolve the problem and the airline may even try to say you never had such an item checked into the cargo.

You can pack your laptop in your checked luggage - but I would highly suggest not too. The TSA even suggest that you bring items like laptops on your carry-on luggage. Your checked luggage gets tossed around quite a bit as well as the load the luggage on top of each other and your bag could be at the bottom and you would not want your laptop to get damaged.
Most airlines let you bring two carry on luggage (one being a laptop) so I would say bring it with you!
Have a great trip!

No! TSA will ask that you carry it on board the plane. Then add to that the risk of theft. I went international and was told to remove the laptop from my checked bag. I now had to scurry around the airport with an additional piece of carry on I hadn't planned to carry.

You can put it in your suitcase but the the airline wont pay you for any damage or if it is stolen. Airlines suck and they make you read the fine print on your tickets so they wont have to pay for any high value items in checked luggage.
Its best to carry it on or you could lalways try to ship it ahead with fedEx or UPS.

Yes, you can put it in your suitcase. However, make sure you pay it well. They tend to open and search the suitcases with laptops it in. I happened to me and my husband, and it looked like there was a little piece missing/broken off because we just threw it in with our clothes.

Yes, you can check it, but I really don't recommend it. Checked bags get thrown around, get a lot of weight stacked on them, sit out in the rain and get lost. Plus the x-ray for checked bags is stronger, it can hurt 35mm film, I'm not sure if it could damage the laptop.

The TSA website should have the most up to date information about flying and what is/isn't allowed on carryon's and what is reccomended to be checked and such.
