I'm just looking for a little bit on intellectual honesty. Whenever I post a question that is the least bit critical of Islam, I usually get very defensive responses that seem to suggest that there's nothing unusual going on, or that there isn't really a problem with Islamic Extremism. Do you deny it? Can you really compare an anomaly like a random "Christian" nut bombing an abortion clinic to 9-11, the London Subway attacks, the Beslan Massacre, the Bali train bombings, etc. Again, I'm not saying that all Muslims are terrorists (my gf is a Muslim), but doesn't it seem that being Muslim is the common denominator of the terrorist demographic almost without exception? Can you imagine it would be like if Christians, Jews, and Buddhists rioted every time there respective religion was supposedly insulted? Does any other religious community commit violence as a reaction to being called violent? No other religion needs such an enormous PR campaign to deflect criticism.

Some of the answers here are very good, i feel. some are silly. george bush, who i do not think is a good president at all, did not say that god told him to invade iraq--stop putting words into his mouth--he does a fine job all by himself. to say islam is a peaceful religion is only partially true. in general, peace is their aim, but they also make it clear in the Qu'ran that Christians and Jews are infidels, and the book speaks about what to do with infidels. leaving the fold of islam is also a dangerous thing to do--this is because, like all religion, it is practiced by human beings who, by their very nature, can be intolerant, cruel, and narrow-minded. i think you should look at the teachings of gandhi and perhaps osho to get some insight into what we should be practicing. insofar as needing a pr campaign, wow, that is well said and right on the money. brilliantly put.

yes, i see the violence and i admit that a lot of muslims are very bad representatives of islam. i dont even want to be associated with those muslims. i never defend their actions i only try to defend the religion itself. certain aspects of islam have been corrupted by muslims especially in the middle east. they do not represent all muslims of course but they are focused on more than the quiet ones. if you were saying something about osama, you probably wouldn't get any defensive responses from muslims. only when the Quran, Muhammad (pbuh), or some other aspect of islam is being critiqued do muslims try to defend it. most perceptions toward islam are stereotypical and do not represent its true nature. i do see the violence, though. i think the problem is that muslims in other countries do not have any ties with the US. what they see is muslims being prosecuted and for that they resent the US. muslims living in the united states understand the problem so they do not rebel against the west for no reason. also the fact that the US has stationed its troops in iraq and has already started war against 2 muslim countries and then is turning against iran also makes it look like an enemy of islam. no body sees the whole story they only see their own. just as americans have hostilities toward middle eastern people, they probably have the same toward the west. its true that violence on both sides is growing and until one side doesn't move toward developing peaceful ties, it can only get worst.

The Muslim terrorists have the misfortune to be poor and ill equipped. The US invasion of Iraq was based on reasons as trumped up as the Muslim attacks on targets around the world. It has also resulted in more deaths than the combined total of Muslim attacks. Was it a Christian terrorist act?
The sad fact is that you can always find a good reason for your next act of violence. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon was retaliation for the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier was retaliation for the capture of, which was retaliation for the shelling of, which was retaliation for the bombing of, . . . which was retaliation for Jericho?
Blaming the Muslim (or Jewish, or Christian) religion for the violence of a few is rarely valid. There are certainly anti-Christian and anti-Jewish elements in Islam just as there are anti-Muslim (and anti-Jewish) elements in Christianity and anti-Muslim elements (but not many anti-Christian elements currently although there have been in the past) within Judaism. None of the religions are truly responsible for that and none of the religions take their true measure of blame for that.
As an atheist, it is just one more reason to hope that a more enlightened populace will give up religion.

I would suggest that EVERYONE go rent or see "Obsession" the movie. It shows some interesting facts about radical Islam. If you go to "www.obsessionthemovie.com/12min.htm" you can watch a 12 minute sample, just to get an idea. You can also search obsessionthemovie. I suggest both muslims and non-muslims alike see it.

Unfortunatly Yes !!!
I do acknowledge that ther is rise in violence among the muslim community , thats very sad aspect, because it is contrary to the teachings of islam
Quran 5:32 "...if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people..."
this is our teachings of islam but unfortunatly we muslims are not following it properly, i know ther are terrorists in every religions both on group level to the national level( I take american invasions as biggest act of terrorism) But this time i would only focus on my religion, yes we peoples are going in very wrong direction, wont go into details of your comparison, but these days muslims are fighting to each other...And worst aspect is suicidal bombing...which is totally "haram" in our religion, suicide even in worse situations is not allowed but they are doing, killing their own muslim brothers and sisters, Shiiat is fighting Sunnis, and there is fight on political levels as well....basic aim behind all this is 'gain of power" for others....these peoples are misguided , they are been told that this kind of killings is jihad by some ignorant just to use them for political purpose and these idiots blindly follow it and buy a direct ticket to hell, I feel Only hatred for such violent peoples who are killling innocents and giving their lives for nothing and at the end get only "hell" in reward......I m ashamed of all this !
Peace !

It is sad that we Muslims today are getting a bad name from our brethren in the Middle East, but to answer your question: yes, there is a rise in the amount of violence being carried out in the Muslim community. I just ask every non-Muslim to remember, the word Islam translates to 'Peace and serenity'

George Bush is a Christian.
He said God told him to invade Iraq.
If a Muslim said something like that it would be on the news for years.
Violence is increasing, and it is increasing EVERYWHERE.
