The answer is that there is no conclusive proof that aspartame is a carcinogen.

However, the FDA states that:

"Carefully controlled clinical studies show that aspartame is not an allergen. However, certain people with the genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU), and pregnant women with hyperphenylalanine (high levels of phenylalanine in blood) have a problem with aspartame because they do not effectively metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine, one of aspartame's components. High levels of this amino acid in body fluids can cause brain damage. Therefore, FDA has ruled that all products containing aspartame must include a warning to phenylketonurics that the sweetener contains phenylalanine."

The most common danger rumored about aspartame is that it causes neurological problems similar to Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease. Again, the proof used is mostly coorelative.

Depends who you ask....

On one side of the coin, people say it is too good to be true and that you are going to die of cancer and have an after life glow of 2000 years. These are usually the same people who eat tofu and bird seed and let their legs get hairy...ie. not quoting double blind scientific studies.

On the flip side you have the most recent and comprehensive study of 473,984 men and women, aged 50 to 71, participating in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study showing no link.

The reality, we are all going to die...and your highest odds are Heart Attack or Stroke. Overweight people are at higher risk for all types of disease. Lets look at your odds:

Cause of Death
Heart Attack or Stroke: 1 in 3
Cancer 1in 5

So roughly 20% chance of cancer. However when you look closer at the type of cancer you will see that lung cancer makes up over 30% of the cancer related deaths which are typically associated with smoking and other inhaled substances.

The types of cancers that they originally suspected might have been caused by aspartame was lymphoma and leukemia which account for about 10% of all cancer deaths and roughly 2% of all deaths and they rule that out in the above study.

So you be the judge, if you are really worried ...drink water.

SHORT ANSWER...You are way more likely going to die of a heart attack from worrying aspartame than from drinking it...so don't worry about it. Eat less trans and saturated fats, exercise, etc.

If gives rats cancer in ridiculously large doses. If you really want to do some research, try the american journal of medicine or pubmed and look for peer reviewed papers on aspartame. you could try googling "Peer Reviewed" and "aspartame"

Aspartame can have some bad side effects to it, everyone is different and may have different reactions. JUST LIKE ANYTHING, if you use it in excessive amounts, it's not a good thing.

Probably not. Keep in mind that the doses they give to mice that cause cancer are really high. However, aspertame can cause ADD like symptoms or memory loss.
