This typically refers to a non-convertible having 2 or 4 doors, and a front and rear seat.
This is also used to describe the car's features. Sedans are considered "cruising" vehicles, with features and handling built for highway and city driving.

1. Low floor distinct 3-box config (Engine - passenger - boot) - e.g. hatchbacks are 2 box, while MPV and people carriers are monovolume and high floor. Estates are on the same platform as sedans or saloons, but do not have a distinctively different boot.
2. smaller than a saloon, which would be a large CAR
3. 4 doors

A sedan car, American English terminology (saloon in British English), is one of the most common body styles of the modern automobile. At its most basic, the sedan is a passenger car with two rows of seats and adequate passenger space in the rear compartment for adult passengers. The vehicle has a separate trunk (boot in British English), for luggage at the rear.

In general, a four door car is a sedan, while a two door is a coupe. But technically, you can have a two door sedan. While my '96 Thunderbird has two doors, it can be called a sedan because it has a B pillar. But most people including me, like to refer to two door cars as coupes, and four doors as sedans.
