I am from Hong Kong, a student currently studying Mass Communication in Australia. I have been here for more than 1 year and my ultimate goal is to improve my English.

However, it is quite a hard issue for international students like me to deal with because I don't think in English but Chinese. I have tried to learn English, but basically I still can't apply English very well. it's funny that I learn English by watching NBA and browsing Yahoo! News everyday. It does help but I suppose it's not enough.

So, could somebody who are not English-speaking be able to give me some advice and share some experience, how to improve my English?

I will really appreciate every single answer from y'all.

I just asked a question similar to this and all of the answers basically say that the best way to learn is to speak it. This is my problem as well. I don't think in Spanish (the language I'm trying to learn) but rather in English (my native tongue). So it's hard when your listening to something and you have to hear it and then translate it in your head. But it takes time and you have to practice as much as possible and interactive learning is probably the most effective way to go about it. I also think that you have to become so familiar with words/phrases that you automatically know what it means without having to mentally translate it.

My suggestion is for you to make friends who speak English as their first language. You can join a student organization and that will afford you more opportunities to practice. If you can, look for a student job as well.

By the way, is your English that bad? Based on your question, your English seems fine. My guess is that you're underestimating your speaking skills.

One of the things I did to improve my Norwegian when I was in Norway was to buy a book I knew almost by heart in English (the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe, by CS Lewis) and also I got from the Gideons International a new testament in English and Norwegian.

I'd suggest getting a book in English that you know very well in Chinese (even if it's a children's book) and try reading it. Also you could ask the Gideon's International about an English/Chinese New testament.

Although I am native english speaking a good way to learn any language is to immerse yourself in it. You already live in an english speaking culture so now you can:
1) Socialize with english speaking people
2) Watch english TV shows and Movies (rent some english movies with chinese sub-titles)
3) Listen to english speaking radio stations - especially talk shows
