CS is analogous to Photoshop 8-it has some major differences.

The biggest one for me is the ability to edit images using layers in 16 bits, thereby preserving more color information. It also has advanced filters where one can "match" colors between photos (i actually haven't found this all that useful.) CS 2 and CS3 have photobridge, and assume that you will be doing massive amounts of editing.

PS 6 is a bit of a dinosaur. As mentioned above, CS requires more memory & more processing speed - be sure your system can handle it. It will work on slower processors, but it is a drag (learned the hard way.)

At lease upgrade to PS 7 and learn the basics.

Definitely a long, long way from Photoshop 6. I have CS2 which I *think* is still kind of similar to CS. As mentioned above, it does come with Adobe Bridge which is a HUGE timesaver for people who edit massive amounts of digital images at a time. Basically, you can easily adjust your digital pictures' warmth, tone, contrast, etc. etc. as a batch before dumping it back into Photoshop (where it would take longer to process the images). I'm pretty sure 6 didn't have the history brushes either which the CS's have now. It also has Vanishing Point where you can paint, clone, stamp, etc. according to the vanishing point of the image; a much nicer noise reduction function, and other new filters to correct things in your photos.

Of course as CS is more advanced it also means it requires higher processing capabilities and more memory to run it. So make sure your system is up-to-date before considering getting CS.

I don't know specificaly between the two versions, but i know that photoshop has come a long way from version 6. They are on CS3 now and a lot of the more advanced features are fine tuned and work much nicer than in pervious versions. Also new in CS2 is adobe bridge which is a much more advanced version of photo browser that came with earlier versions. It really makes it easy to organize all your images. There are also new tools as far as selecting and touching up. The program has come a long way from version 6.

But i you are asking just from version 6 to just plain CS (not the latest) Then i am not positive.

I have Photoshop 7 because I didn't want all the bells and whistles that come with CS.
If I'm correct, CS is also for businesses such as advertising and designing (signs, banners, etc.). Because I use mine strictly for photo-editing and being self-taught PS 7 is plenty for me.
