...it tasted pretty gross! It has a dark green almost black bumpy skin, and it was firm but not totally hard. Was it unripe? What is it supposed to taste like? A lot of people on here seem to love them but I don't understand how that could be when they taste like this.

The inside is bright green only around the edge and the rest (most of it) is yellow.

It sounds like it was perfectly ripe. Did it look bright green with a hint of yellow where the pit should be? Then it was perfect. It can be an acquired taste. I personally love them.

Depending upon the avocado, you can tell when it's ripe when it's slightly soft and when you cut it, it should slice very easily like a knife through room temperature butter.

It something you have to get used to...
I remember when I first tried avocado. It was pretty gross. It smelled and tasted like latex paint.

Now, I've gotten over the smell and love avocados, especially guacamole.

Guacamole Recipe courtesy Alton Brown
Show: Good Eats
Episode: Dip Madness

3 Haas avocados, halved, seeded and peeled
1 lime, juiced
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 medium onion, diced
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 clove garlic, minced

In a large bowl place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Drain, and reserve the lime juice, after all of the avocados have been coated. Using a potato masher add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve.

I don't think it was ripe enough to eat. They should be soft not mushy but not firm either. They don't taste like much but they are good in salads and sandwiches because they add texture and some flavor. They are used to make gaucamole. Next time use them in salad with a little evoo and vinegar. They are very healthy.

Did you eat it plain? And it really should have been soft, not firm...but...

I don't like them plain either. They're pretty good sliced on sandwiches or salads. My mom used to halve them, put a dollop of cottage cheese where the pit is removed from, then top it with ranch dressing.

And of course I think the favorite way to enjoy avocado is a good guacamole! But I don't know ANYONE who just eats avocado plain!

it probably wasn't ripe and even when they are ripe, they are usually better when you eat them with other things, like in a sandwich or on a burger, in a soft taco a salad or made into guacamole. Personally I don't eat them on their own, but enjoy them a lot when used as I mentioned, as part of a recipe.

They are kind of buttery, very slightly sweet.

Try this. Sprinkle a little Lawry's seasoned salt on it, a dash of red pepper, and some garlic powder (not garlic salt). Then mash it up. Enjoy.

You need to scoop the "meat" out of it and mix it up finely like a mash. Then, use it to dip some tortilla chips in it with a little salt --YUM>

I totally love avocados, the one you had seems like it was not ripe, but they are really good plain with salt and pepper.
