It would seem to me there would be little need if there is little or no traffic.

Maybe I had better clarify the question. It looks like there are 200+ miles. between some cities like between Alice Springs and Ayers Rock. I find it hard to believe there is anyone out there patrolling for speeders

Speed limits in Australia outside cities are 100km/h except in South Australia where it is 110, in parts of western NSW where it is 110, on most freeways and motorways where it is 110 and in the Northern Territory where it is 120km/h. There could be other areas that allow 110km/h.

The Northern Territory used to have unlimited speed on the roads but they brought in the 120km/h restriction this year.

That being said, you can get away with higher speeds in some areas but not others. I have been booked for doing 130 between Hay and Balranald - dead straight, dead flat no traffic except me and the police car that booked me.

Oh yeah, there's speed limits. A mate of mine was doing 130 kmh (about 80 mph) on the Nullabor (the "Gunbarrel Highway" - about 600 miles of dead flat and straight) and got busted near Euclea by a radar trap. He and the cop were the only vehicles he has seen for the last 3 hours.

usually speed limits are between 100-110 kms per hour on highways depends on where in Australia you are. Even if you are in the outback there is alot of wildlife that crosses the roads so take care

I'm from Illinois, and we do have a speed limit of 55 mph on the country roads. A lot of people don't pay attention to it, but it is safer b/c we are in farm country and there are lots of wildlife roaming around, and tons of tractors that move really slow.
