Prom? Is it a date or a gathering?

Stupid question but if I go to Prom with someone why is it that I am a prom date? Is it really a date? XD Just thought I'd throw out some weird question.

It's not a weird question but yes hon it is a date. Any gathering that you attend with someone of the opposite sex is a date.
