okay, so I just turned 20 years old and have beed a full-overtime student for over a year up until this semester. My parents lost custody of my 2 younger sisters and I when I was 17 and have not made any sort of an attempt to regain custody yet. I have lived with my fiance and his family for the past 2 years. I have no proof that I supported myself from a job but I do have reciepts from groceries ect... The first year that I was in school I filed for financial aid independently and got the max amt of money from the state. This year I only got hope and have been deemed to have no financial need because my dad claimed me on his taxes. He had no right to -yes I have looked into the laws. So now I have no money to pay for school much less a decent parent to help me so what do I do to make sure that the IRS will make him ammend his return. If they do he will have to pay back money he got for claiming me and I can get my academic grants back!

i would suggest contacting the IRS directly. Give them all your information and your dads. tell them your situation and show them your school expenses. also, ask your fiances family if they would be willing to state that you have been living with them and and had no support from your father. Hes a jerk for doing it and if the IRS investigates, you may get what you need.

Based on the information you provided, you should be able to claim your own exemption, File a paper return, when the IRS sends you notice of 2 people using your SS#, send in the proof that they request showing that you should be entitled to the exemption. School records, Dr records, a letter from a family Priest or Pastor

Contact the IRS, 800-829-1040. Ask for a Tax Payer Advocate. Make your return on paper and have it ready to fax to the Advocate. Have ready any and all proof that you are on your own; employers, neighbors, pastor etc.
