Right now he looks very bad; he died in 1926 (b. 1840).

Check this site and see his self-portraits and photos of him at different ages: http://giverny.org/monet/biograph/

What beautiful work he put out!

Like anyone else who has been dead since about 1926. What did Claude Monet look like? He seemed to have had a rugged strength like a farmer and I feel he must have enjoyed working in his garden, as much as painting it. From his waist line I would also guess he enjoyed his food. He used a beard even in his earlier years and later in life he looked the authentic patriarch with his long white beard. He seems( from photographic evidence) to have worn strong tweeds with plus fours most of the year and had a cigarette, with typical French yellow cigarette paper, in his mouth most of the time. He had problems with cataracts in his later years and used tinted spectacles which had an influence on his palette at this time; things improved somewhat after an operation. The predominate impression (pardon the pun) was one of great physical strength which seems justified when one considers the size and work involved in his late water lily paintings which would have been a daunting task for a man half his age.
