My 6 years old dog all the sudden got insomnia. She used to sleep just fine untill few months ago. Now she wakes up in the middle of night and keeps pacing. If we make her stay outside our bedroom she whines. What can we do to make her sleep like she used to?

I also have a 2 year old daughter that consumes all my time and energy. Adding sleepless nights because of the dog is just becoming too much. I really have no time or energy to pay extra atention to the dog at the moment.

Have her checked by the vet and also start taking her for walks at night the exercise is good for both of you and it will tire her out and help her sleep better.

Maybe something frightened her in the middle of the night. If you allow it, invite her in your bed to sleep with you until she is able to sleep through the night. Call her up by you, pet her, talk to her, etc. If you don't care to do this or don't allow her to go to bed with you, maybe you should give her to somebody who cares enough to find the real problem to her insomnia. You say you don't have extra time or energy to share with the dog, then maybe your family situation isn't fit to have a dog. I'm not by any means saying you're a bad pet owner, I'm just saying that given your situation, you may not have the time or energy to properly handle the situation. It probably could be solved by a lot of trial and error, but again, does your family have the time and energy? On the other hand, maybe she is trying to tell you something. Does your 2 year old have any medical problems? Maybe the dog can sense some sort of problem that she's trying to tell you about. Don't ignore her warnings. Get up when she paces and see where she leads you. Sometimes, if a child stops breathing in the middle of the night, or coughs, or cries, or has any other medical mishaps in the middle of the night, the dog could just be trying to warn you. Good Luck!

Maybe a sleeping pill would help the dog, but I don't think it is recommended. If you want to start your dog sleeping outside your room, it's never too late. Of course she would whine for about 1 week, but if you ignore her and she will be used to sleeping outside. I did that with my dog and he knows his bed when it's time to sleep. I don't even have to ask him to go to his bed.

It sounds like your dog is just in need of some affection, my dachshund gets like that if I don't spend enough time with him. I would try just a little extra attention for the dog during the day, and maybe get her a kennel to sleep in with a nice snuggly blanket in it.

Find some time to play with the dog or get rid of it. They are high maintenance animals and need constant attention and need to be worked/ played wtih. If she is to much find her a home that would want her. What has happened is that her sleep habits have changed and sleeps while you are at work.
