typically, mixed breeds are calmer, and more protective, both small and large. but it all depends on the temperment of the individual animal.

The calmest dog I know of and have had the pleasure to meet is the Newfoundland, but believe me when I say they are HUGE!! But they are beautiful and sweet. They will literally go to a dog park and just lay there.

I have also heard that the greyhound is a very calm dog.

I've owned many dobermans and they are loyal and calm. When you want to work, they are ready to work. When the day is lazy, they will be lazy, too. Just make sure every day isn't lazy because they are working dogs.

I have a yorkie/maltese mix, too. The first one I have owned. He is seventeen weeks and the cutest, calmest little guy. I'm not sure if this is an innate quality however. He is four pounds and will grow to, we're thinking, seven or eight pounds.

But if you want a really really really calm dog, go for the Newfoundland or Newf or Newfy as they are commonly called.

I am going to vote for the gentle giants of the dog world... Newfoundland Dogs.

Excerpt from Wikipedia... The official AKC breed description says "Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed.". They are nicknamed the "Gentle Giant" and "Nature's babysitter." They are protective of children. The dog Nana in James M. Barrie's Peter Pan was a Newfoundland.

Relative to other breeds, Newfoundland puppies, especially older puppies, tend to be calm. Newfoundlands take up to three years to reach full maturity. They have deep barks, but are not good guard dogs. They have been known to grieve when separated from their families. Their large size makes them difficult to keep in many living situations.

Temperament: The Newfoundland's expression is soft and reflects the character of the breed--benevolent, intelligent, dignified but capable of fun. He is known for his sterling gentleness and serenity. Any show of ill temper or timidity is to be severely faulted. Bad temperament is a disqualification.

Mixed breeds are not calmer by definition, it depends what the mix is. A pitbull or lab mix is not generally going to be a calm dog. It also varies from dog to dog. Age has the greatest effect on how calm a dog is.

Definitely not a Boston Terrier the one I own could run laps for days on end if I gave him the chance. I would say a Labrador, Great Dane, Newfoundland, Basset Hound, English Bulldog. But there is no guarantee to say any dog is calm, It all depends on the dogs temperment, how its trained, what envionment you bring it up in, how active you are, how much exercise you give it, who lives in your house (like children other pets), Dogs have to be taugth to be well behaved, without training any dog no matter what breed could turn our destructive and hyper. If you give it the training and exercise it needs you will have a well behaved dog. When they are puppies of course they won't want to just lay around they want to play play play.

If you want to go all the way up the scale, Great Danes are noted as very calm gentle dogs. They don't get their name, "the gentle giants" for nothing!

That being said, they need obedience training and to learn manners, just like any other dog.
