She probably gets a BIG reaction from you when she grabs them...and this is not your fault! I, too, would hate to have a dog with a bright purple tongue.
Your dog was rewarded in some way for picking these up in the first place. Just work on object exchange or "Give" -

and keep those pens out of reach if the dog is unsupervised. Whether or not they smell like you isn't as important as the reward the dog gets from playing with them!

Some dogs have the tendancy to chew on things, maybe they are around in easy to reach places too often. just make sure to pick up your pens and highlighters so your wont need to take a trip to the vet soon. ;0)

I find this is mostly common in dogs that are 3 yrs and under. My American Eskimo got anything she could to chew, until 3 yrs old, and then no more. If your dog is under 3 yrs, just remember that the chewing phase is likely still present. The dog may already have all adult teeth, but until 3 yrs old they will continue to shift into proper place within the jawline. This will still give a dog the urge to chew. Just try to keep these things out of your dogs reach.

My pit bull chews up all of her toys!! Thank god it is only her toys though. She use to chew on everything but I told her a very firm no and kept repeating. Take away the pen then put it back in front of the dog. If it goes for it again repeat process, and show the dog what it can chew on. I have a udge toy box just for all her toys. She knows what is her. I can even leave all my shoes on the floor and she pays no attention to them. But only her toys in the box, anything else falls in it by mistake and its fair game to her!! That and I think they get bored and they just want to chew things to keep them busy.

LOL! Dogs have personalities and likes and dislikes for things just like people. He's found something that is fun to chew. Sorry it has to be your pens. :) Just say "Eh!" in a firm tone and put your finger up to his nose when he goes for the pen. Soon, you won't even have to say the word. He'll know when he sees your finger go up that what he is doing you don't appreciate.

That could be, I am a student too, when I am using the highlighter my pom will climb on me to get the highlighter. She is a crazy dog! I think the highlighter stands out, bc its so bright, so she is drawn to it. maybe?
