Canon is a great brand. It's the only brand I usually would recommend.
Look at the ultra compact, easy to use...
SD600 or the much nicer looking, SD700 IS, which has optical image stabilization.
They take great quality photos and movies, as well as have excellent features.

If you want a slightly larger camera, with the added benefit of full manual controls if you want them (so you can select your own shutter speed or aperture), then the Canon A630 or A640 would make an excellent choice. They have a great battery life of up to 500 shots. You would need to buy rechargeable AA size NiMH batteries plus a charger, though.
And they have the very handy vari-angle (flip out & twist) LCD, which folds in when not in use...so is protected from getting scratched.

If the SD models are too small for your liking, then I would definitely go with the A630 or the A640 (which is my pick of the two).
I would recommend you buy a fast SD card to go with either of the above...for the best camera performance you can get.(Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III).
Good luck...
