I just got myself two longbows, and I want to go hunting (after I take my hunter training classes and get a license of course), but I cant find any good place nearby to go hunt at. Im in San Jose, CA, about 80 miles south of San Francisco, and the closest place with good hunting is monterey, except the only private land management site I found costs 600 bucks a hunt for 3 people. Is Hunting always so expensive?

Hunting in California can sometimes be more expensive and more of a hassle than it's worth. You can thank the people in charge. Now days you almost have to go pay to hunt on private property. You just can't expect to find an open field 15 minutes away from home. You'll have to go outside of the city a little bit if you want to find those public hunting areas.
If you're into upland and waterfowl check out Grizzly Island in Suisun city up there around Fairfield. Just take 680 north. It's run by CA Fish & Game so bring steel shot. It's about $15 for a day and they have some pretty good bird populations. They also have some tule elk drawings.

If you're into deer hunting then you might have to go up north a bit or east of you in those hills. The best areas are up near the Nevada border but those zones are for drawing only. Check out the deer zone maps to find some areas of interest and look them up online. The cost shouldn't be a whole lot if you find public land.
If you want the abundant wild hogs that are roaming around and taking over our state Monterey County is the best place for public land so look into that again. Believe me there ARE places to hunt for a lot less. It just takes a lot of research.
Anti-hunters, leagalized and regulated hunting is not bad for the animals nor their populations. It is actually improving the wildlife and their habitats. Thank you for doing your research.

there is public hunting land in California, look for National forest and there is also some lottery hunts on some of the military reservations like Hunter Ligget...
anytime anyone asked you to stop hunting remind them that Hunting license fees (and fishing fees) pays for Game and non game management in each state. So even a non hunted species like the banana slug reaps the benfits from hunters, who largely (and Happily) bear most all of the cost of wildlife programs in the states. Games populations are very healthy because they are hunted. I can see in the bear future that in California they will have to open Couger hunting up again since they have become too numerous and are getting brazen with regards to attacking and trying to eat people, children and pets.

In California, most all of the watering holes have a great number of wild animals congregating every Friday and Saturday nights.
Take plenty of arrows, some of the animals are very good at dodging and weaving.
If you dangle any white powder they will run to you, then take your best shot.
You realize I'm talking about California liquor establishments, when you get proficient with your bow, then take it to the next level and hunt at the California Bar Association. The animals their stand around with their heads up their ***.
Good hunting!

Check out the Mendocino National Forest. This place is so big it occupies 3 counties. It doesn't cost anything just drive up, set up camp and have fun hunting.

Get some maps and look at the Sierras. Lots of public lands to hunt, but in Ca., you'll be competing with lots of others!

Tred Barta says to go to your city hall and ask to see a map of public land. There are many places that you can hunt on because it is YOUR land.
