Positive reinforcement. My husband trains dogs and he will actually change the inflection of his voice to go along with the positive reinforcement. A higher pitched "Good boy!" and a low, deep, "NO!". And of course, a treat for completing the desired task AS SOON AS HE does it. And like the first answer noted: PATIENCE! Puppies are playful and curious. It might be hard to keep their attention. Good luck!

Well, i just got a new pupy not too long ago and i've learned that it is best to train a pupy alone for a short period of time each day. Maybe five minutes a day, everyday in a quiet area with nothing around that will distact the pupy. As the pupy gets older gratually expand the period of time about maybe 2 0r 3 mins. MAYBE longer. Like if you're training "sit", repeat the word "sit" while pushing down the dogs rear end. And then each week gratully expand the time. All 3 of my dogs are extremely smart, so I didn't do much training with them (considering I only helped train 2). That's all the advice I can give you.

Ian Dunbar has published several great books about puppies, what to expect from them, and how best to teach them. He's all-positive - he won't be recommending choke chains, shock collars, or any of that kind of punishing, forceful junk. His books are widely available.
*Trying to "force" a pup to do something is not OK.*
I'd recommend finding a puppy class soon. You'll learn a lot about how to teach your pup things which will cut down a lot on frustration!
Have fun. That's the point, right?

ok its really really easy.

potty. you let im out side. you feed him out side. let him stay out until he goes potty. then you send him back to the house when he does. for thirty minutes. then you put him in his crate. and repeat for a bout a week. he will associate potty to cratting.

commands. begin with sit. tell him to sit and show him how with force. then praise him and give him treats. Make sure you do it before a meal. tell him sit if he does it on his own act like he just walked on water and give him a tiny bit of treat. proceed with down. off place stay fetcha nd so on. good place for advice is yahoo groups ... look for the search term dog

Patience,patience,patience----read lots of books, ask questions, use positive reinforcement, take obedience classes, and never hurt your dog no matter what it does.
