Depends what you're looking for, really. Cuba's good for several reasons: lowest prices (especially if you're smart enough to get *away* from resorts) plus great drinks, great music & dancing, great snorkeling -- but ho-hum food. Playas del Este, between Havana and Varadero, would be my destination. It helps to know a bit of Spanish, of course.
Jamaica's good (especially the fruit and coffee), but really not all that safe in some places. Montego Bay can be fascinating, also the north shore's black-sand beaches.
Dominican Republic's beaches can be fun. Puerto Rico is boringly U.S.
The smaller Caribbean islands have less going on, but maybe that's what you're looking for. You could choose among them based on language. English is understood anywhere really, but it's fun talking with locals.
So if you want to stick to English, there are Antigua and Barbados; the British Virgin Islands offer wonderful sailing. The Bahamas are cloudier and cooler over winter.
For French try Guadeloupe or Martinique. For Dutch try the ABC islands, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. And for Spanish, there are Cozumel (though it's quite touristy) and (more interesting) the Bay Islands off Honduras.
Ah, I envy you going down there.

The French side of St Martin. For an all-around resort, I would select L'Habitation at the east end of the island. There are remote beaches at the east end that keep the average tourist away. There are little cafes right on the sand that you just drive up to and park. You will need a rental car on the French side (Hertz, Avis, at the airport). It's a bit pricey because the French have the Euro. For shopping, drive south to the Dutch side where they don't use the Euro yet.
French St Martin is a real piece of France. Every resident is a full French citizen. St Martin is part of Martinique Province just like Hawaii is one of the 50 states.

there is in basic terms one answer to this, and that's Honolulu, Hawaii. i've got been there 4 cases, to Waikiki sea coast often, and no the place else interior the worldwide beats it. no remember the place you flow, the view is only breathtaking. it is the main non violent place interior the worldwide. Youcontinual around the island and you'd be only surprised. i've got been international and not something even starts to earnings with Hawaii, not Paris, not Amsterdam, not L.A., not everywhere. To me, Hawaii is my heaven.
