If they have probable cause they can. If you roll up your windows and lock the car, it might signal them you are hiding something, and hence be probable cause.

In Canada we can search a vehicle after we arrest someone (depending on the offence, it is usually the immediate area that the driver had control over at the time of the offence, some other offences the whole car including trunk). I would be towing your car away anyway so I would just get the tow driver to open the car up, keys or no keys.

If something prohibited or dangerous is in plain view a police officer can take it.
A policeman can search your car without a warrant limited to the area the driver can reach to insure his own safety. Such as under the seat.
A police officer can search your car without a warrant under certain circumstances such as they believe a child is in the trunk and suffocating (exigent circumstances.)
The best thing is not to have something in your car you're not supposed to have.
If an officer wants to search your car, you can ask him/her what they are looking for. Be pleasant and not a wise aleck.
An officer can detain you at the scene until he gets a warrant which can take a very long time.
If the officer arrests you for a traffic offense, which is usually why he stopped you in the first place, guess what? The wrecker operator that comes to tow your vehicle can do an "inventory" of the contents to protect themselves. If they find something illegal they have a duty to tell the officer.
If you are hauling contraband you ain't gettin' away.

Actually they are more likely to if you behave as you describe - it is called probable cause. If you behave in a manner consistent with concealment the officer has not only the right but the obligation to search the vehicle for what ever you are trying to conceal even if he/she must break a window to accomplish this. You also could face a charge of obstruction. It is best when pulled over to comply as quietly with the officer's wishes as possible then proceed on your way. Never interfere it just makes matters worse.

This question has been asked hundreds of times.
The answer is yes they can. Reasons which allow search of a vehicle:
1: Consent
2: Probable Cause
3: Search incident to arrest. All passenger compartment areas and accessible to the driver
4: Inventory of vehicle for a tow
In addition to your original key throwing scenario: Yes they can enter with a slim jim and inventory the vehicle. Sorry that won't help you.

a college can whether that is in a coverage contract. some districts supply conditional parking privileges in substitute for consent to envision the contents of the motor vehicle at any time that is parked there. AND particular this suggests each COMPARTMENT interior the motor vehicle. those regulations got here approximately in the process the advent of drug unfastened college zones. Your automobile is on college factors for this reason the college has a vested activity to be certain there is not any longer something in it which will threaten the protection of the infants who attend which includes your self. that includes something on the subject rely of criminality like weapons or drugs and quickly to be soda and candy bars. in case you refuse they might ban the motive force from parking on college factors. Or in the event that they have a reason to have self belief there are drugs interior the motor vehicle they're going to call the police and a K9 unit will alert the presence of any. in the event that they do there is smart suspicion drugs are interior the vehicle and can seek without warrant.

That's why they ask if you mind them searching your car. If you refuse, all they have to do is take you into custodey until they get a warrant to search it. So either way, they will search your car. Letting them is the easier way out of it because if you have nothing to hide, then you won't go to jail.

if they have a reason to believe there is evidence within site, sound or smell they have a legal responsibility to enter your vehicle and secure any evidence, so the short answer to your question is yes they can, especially if you give the reason you did your giving just cause to enter and search your vehicle because apparently you didnt want it searched, not a smart move.

Additionally, if they see something in plain sight. The only question I have is--if you lock your keys in the car, how are you going to get back in? Of course, you are probably going to have to ask a cop to help you get back in, and BANGO, they got ya!

Wrong. If they have caught you breaking the law and they have reason to believe you have illegal substances or proof in your car they can search it.
