I think you have got mixed up. That rule is if your are passport is due to expire in say 6 months then you wont be able to travel.

As far as i know you can travel on your passport as soon it lands on the doormat. Because people go to the Passport office to get a passport and travel immediately.

You may have misunderstood. Some countries require passport holders to have a minimum length of time left on their passport before it is due to expire. This is usually 6 months but can be 3 months.

If you have less than 9 months on your passport, you can apply for a new one. The passport office will simpy add the unexpired time to your new passport. You should visit the Passport Office website http://www.passport.gov.uk/ for more info on passport renewals.

no some countries insist that there is 6 months life left on a passport but I have never heard of a passport having to be 6 months old

Not at all. Sounds like you are thinking of the rule that there has to be several months left on your passport when you travel so it is valid for about 6 months after your return date.

No that isn't correct. The entry requirements for UK nationals are: British nationals must have a valid passport. For holders of passports endorsed British Citizen or British Overseas Territories Citizen, a visa is not required for a stay of 90 days, provided the visit is for tourist purposes only. In all other cases a visa is required, and passports must be valid at least three months beyond the period of intended stay. However, it is advised to hold a passport valid for six months beyond period of intended stay, so you'll be fine with a new passport. Enjoy your stay!
