Their origin comes from someone whose name was Gregory or similar. There is a legendary origin that it originated from a Giric or Gyric who was 4th in succession from Kenneth the 1st. On account of their many lawless deeds justly or unjustly laid to their charge they were outlawed by the Scottish Parliament in 1603. So they were not persecuted by the English or "British" as portrayed in films and novels. It became illegal to use the name so some changed their names to Gregorson, Grierson, Stewart, Grant etc.
