It's better to take the hit and say you're sorry. I'd just say,
"hey, sorry about getting all wound up earlier today. I just want you to have a great time at your game and know that I'll be cheering for you."
You're not saying you were wrong, you're just apologizing for loosing your cool and you are telling him that what's important now is his game and you're 100% behind him on that. You can find your own words for this, but that's the basics of it.
