No, you can not cancel a return once it has been submitted, but you can file an amended return to claim the difference.
You would need to complete the form 1040X to do so. wait a week or so to allow the processing of your original return before sending in the amended return. The normal processing time frame for an amended return is 8 to 12 weeks

You cannot stop an e-file once it has been accepted by the IRS. E-filing takes your return to an e-file process center that reviews the return. Some centers can stop the e-file at that point. From there it goes to the IRS for acceptance or rejection. If the return is rejected, then you can e-file again with another preparer. Once accepted (usually within 3 days), you cannot refile electronically.

You are not out of luck however. You may file an amended return to claim the higher credit. An amended return can take 6-weeks to process, and upto 30 days to receive a check after processing, less if you go direct deposit.

A word of caution. I am generally worried by anyone who claims that they are going to get you a different amount of tax back before they actually look at the return you filed. There is a $1,000 refundable child credit, but you must meet the qualifications, and if you owed taxes before the credit, the credit is reduced by the amount you owe.

If you want, you could email me some additional details from the return, and I could give you a better assessment.

Have the second preparer file a 1040x, which is an amended return. It will amend the first return. You'll have to pay both preparers but if you'll really be getting back an additional $1100 it should be worth it.

Now, a word of caution. The second preparer can't be certain how much you'll be getting back until they actually do your taxes. The $1800 figure may just be to suck you in only to find that the final result is much lower.

There's almost no way to get the fee back from the first preparer. They'll say they prepared your taxes based on the information you gave them.

You can't stop it from being filed once it has been sent. However, you can have the other company prepare an amended return for you.
