Find companies that have need of your chosen field. Then, instead of sitting in front of a computer, go visit these companies.

Make up a resume and take it to each company, personally.
This will show them you are serious.

Learn to use proper spelling and proper grammar.
This shows them you are not lazy and take pride in your words.

Dress appropriately. There is nothing a prospective employer hates more than to see a person who is not dressed properly.
Guys: Wear a suit or nice slacks (not jeans) and a dress shirt.
Girls: Wear a tailored suit or a nice, proper dress, or nice blouse and skirt.
This shows that you are not slovenly. That you take pride in your appearance and are serious about "fitting in" to the company.
Even if you are going for a job at McDonald's, appearances DO matter.

Ask questions about the company. Don't just be concerned with your pay scale, but show an interest in the company itself.

At times, it may seem like a waste of time, because you will only talk to a secretary or someone you don't think has anything to do with whether you will be offered a job or not. But, be respectful to all. They may give a good report on you. Then, you will be called back for another interview.
Good Luck!
