Do you have any experience of Shar Pei? If not, I would suggest you contact the Shar Pei Club who should be able to help you. Shar Peis are a pretty specialist breed. Do NOT hit him for growling or you may find that he doesn't give a growl in future & just decides to bite without warning.

Male Shar-Pei's are more aggressive then females, you will just need to teach him now, not by spanking, but by allowing your family members to greet him and play with him. They are also more dominant then the females and if he is not a pure breed (they used to mix them with Chow) then he will be slightly more aggressive. I had a female and she was a very good dog. If you are not aware of the breed I am sure that you can find some good information on a web site.

Animal mothers discipline their young through actions to tell the youngster that she is boss. The mother animal then makes the youngster "grovel." You have to take the role of "pack leader." The way a pack leader or the animal's mother would discipline the young animal is this:
They do not spank or yell. They growl back, grab the youngster by the scruff of the neck and give them a quick shake. You could say, "NO!" loudly and strongly, along with the neck shake. This does nothing to harm the animal. In fact many mother animals carry their young around by the scruff of the neck. Besides, their skulls are much more durable and their brains are not easily damaged like a human baby would be if you shook it. (Never shake a human baby.)
Other things you need to consider are:
A. Smell. Animals react to smell. They can smell fear, but they also react to certain perfumes and colognes. These smells can trigger a negative reaction in the animal.
B. Are you sure your friends/family are trustworthy? Animals can sense negativity in people. I will normally trust my animal's reaction towards a person, rather than my own instincts.
C. Does he feel the need to "protect" you?

It could be any number of reasons including nothing to do with your dog or family or anything else. Now, here you say you've only had him for a week. Patience. Not only a virtue but a necessary tool. This isn't a machine. It's a living thing. It must be trained. Today, we don't have the relationship we did a hundred or two hundred years ago with animals. They were very important to us. In many parts of the world this is still very important and in some ways better than our machines. They just can't go where they go. It'll take time and dedication for you to train your animal. If you, as a wise mistress dedicate intelligently this time to it, it'll be a very good thing for both of you to learn from and take pleasure in.

Tho im no expert, i would say with the same method as stopping ur dog from barking. a dog cant bark(or in this case growl) at the same time as sniffing. keep a tasty treat to hand and place it under the dogs nose whenever it starts growling whilst saying shsh. rewarding it when it stops growling with the treat and lots of praise. repeat until success!

You should get into some training classes. Shar Pei's arent known for their stable temperaments. Ive met quite a few of them, and not one of them have I trusted.

I have read through some of the other answers and i dont agree with hitting your dog.
Your dog is protecting you he sees other people as a threat to you and him try putting him on a lead when you answer the door and keep a box of small treats by the door when anyone comes in tell him to sit and get the person go give him a small treat. he will associate people comming in to getting treats. OH!!! and when he is good PRAISE him well.

U need to show him that that is wroung. Everytime he growls just give him a spank on the behind a light spank just hard enough to let him know u didn't approve of his behaivior and then give him a firm no. If it sounds like he was paying attention right after u told him to stop. Give him a doggy treat to award him. If this doesn't work take him to dog training classes. What your dog is doing though is natural behavior. He feels that u are indanger but like i said step in and let him know thats not the case. If that doesn't work take him to dog training classes.

I never use any scolding or punishment with my dogs...it just doesn't work. Find a way to make him happy...OR what I do is use disappointment. My dog's name is Mouse, and when she does something wrong I say.... OH MOUSE, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? And I shake my head and sound disappointed, and she gets embarassed, and then three minutes later we're best friends again. Just sound really disappointed, dogs are smarter than we sometimes give them credit for, and honestly, if you've only had him that short of a time, you need to give a dog MONTHS to get comfortable in their new surroundings. Don't expect too much too soon! Good luck!
