Normally I am opposed to items for the home being bought as a birthfay gift but since you are supplementing it with the jeewelry it should be ok-you know your wife better than we do.
The fact that you cared enough to ask others their opinion makes you ok in my book.
I hope she has a great birthday and that this helps you!

Hi!
It isn't that it is sexist, it is that it is not very romantic. I think one buys a knife set as part of the general household possessions.. but a birthday present is personal.
And while things like flowers and candy can be and often are expected to be shared with others, there are things that will do really nicely that are for only that person....in this case, your wife....so it might be some sachets for her dresser drawers, or some perfumed hangers for her closet, or a book about gardens or flowers, or maybe a subscription to "Gourmet Magazine" or anything, as long as it does not look like others may benefit from it, too .... it is just for her... a sweater ... if she goes fishing with you, a new tackle box ...... maybe her own coffee mug with her name on it -- but a nice one...a beautiful linen runner for her dresser... a basket full of soap from a good store .... etc, etc, etc.... new towels in her favorite color ...or: if you wish to share, and since you are her best guy, a trip somewhere ... to dinner, a show, a weekend in a country lodge ...
By the way, sexist??? Since all the great chefs (great ones!) are men .. knives are not sexist if people meant that it would be a put-down to her since she is a woman and expected to cook.

I don't think it's sexist. If your wife cooks, it's appropriate, especially if she's made comments that the kitchen knife set is getting worn out. Ask yourself, though, if you think your wife would be offended by it. It wouldn't offend me, but I'm not her. I might be a little disappointed if my husband just got me a knife set because I'd think (sarcastically) "wow, you romantic fool" but not because I thought he was trying to keep me in the kitchen or something like that. However, you overcame the "not romantic" problem by deciding to get her some jewelry, too. You picked something that is practical and something that she will enjoy and feel pretty in. I think you did great.

I would save the knife set for another time. The jewelry is a good idea and the fact that you're even thinking of her birthday(remembering it at all) much less, in advance, is SUPER. A lot of men out there forget.
If you really want to get her something for the house, have a maid service come in that weekend or have the carpets shampooed. Something that she doesn't have to do for a change.

If you wife would like the knife set. Or has given hints that would be a nice gift I would say sure. I think you know what kind of gifts your wife would except as gifts or insult.

I'd love it if you bought me a knife block full of Henckels Knives ...especially if there was a shiny piece of jewelry hanging from it too!
Seriously though, a practical gift with a nice "for her only" special gift is right on point!

Hey if she cooks like I do, knives are the one kitchen tool that I WILL NOT compromise. and I'll bet she thinks the same way. Go for Henckels or something good. She'll know if you ordered the Ginko Set off of Ebay.

It depends on the woman.
A set of good knives would be a very good gift for someone who likes to cook, and the addition of jewelry would make it a much less inappropriate gift than it would be without the jewelry!
Some women like getting things that make their job easier. A vacume cleaner cpild be wonderful gify for many women who can't afford to get one themselves, but I wouldn't rcomment it unless she has asked you to get one for her.
You know your wife. If you can't feel comfortable with your best effort, then ask her what she would think of a "Practical" gift.
