i would keep him in a crib until he is able to get out of it. it's really the safest thing for him... you just never know what they can get into. :-) my daughter was climbing out of her crib well before her second birthday. my niece, on the other hand, is 28 months and still sleeps in her crib.

if you don't have a crib that converts to a day bed or toddler bed you might want to think about going right to a regular bed. it will save some money and make one less transition for him to deal with.

on the other hand... if you and he are just super excited about getting the toddler bed, and he is in a safe spot if wakes up (away from stairs, in a baby-proofed room), i say go for it! trust your gut.

You can move him now if you wish. I had all three of my kids in a toddler bed between 12 months and 18 months. It became necessary when they started to dive out of bed head first.
If the crib that you are using does not convert into a toddler bed, there are many cute beds and they are not very expensive at all either! You could always get a twin bed and buy side rails to attach to it. Either way, he should enjoy his new "big boy" bed.
Good luck!

Skip the toddler bed all together. Buy a twin bed and put rails on the sides to keep them from rolling out. Cheaper in the long run and the kids LOVE their big boy beds! Been there, done that with all my kids at 18-24 months.

We started my son in the toddler bed just after he turned 17 months. That's when he discovered he could climb out of his crib and I wasn't going to take on that battle. It's tough, though, because it is a lot easier to get out of the toddler bed for them and come running up the hall for you -- laughing their heads off the whole way. You're probably going to face a tough transition -- mostly for you -- because you're going to have to keep putting him back in the bed. Just be consistent and keep that nighttime schedule going and it should subside quickly. Good Luck!!

I put my son in a toddler bed at 18 months, however, he never stayed in it. He still doesn't he will wake up at early morning hours and go downstairs and walk around. I have to go get him and put him back in bed or he'd just stay awake and play.
I guess it just all depends on you and your son. I have known people to keep their kids in cribs until they were almost 3.

Whenever he starts climbing out of his crib. It is safest to do it then so he doesn't fall and hurt himself.
