I'm searching for an HD TV to purchase in the lower thousand range. Nothing crazy but want to get my money's worth. Samsung 46" and 50" are what I'm looking and definitely do not want plasma. Is 780p really that bad or is it where technology is at right now and the 1080p and i are ahead of their time?!?

1080p - Very little, if anything is currently boadcasted/recorded at this resolution right now. It's way ahead of it's time.
780p - It'll be fine for now... much better than any tube tv.

Rear projection and DLP TV's can be really nice, but you have to worry about a couple things:
1)The bulb, which is hundreds of dollars, wears out after a few years.
2) If you play video games or play videos where a segment of the screen doesn't change very much (such as health meters, etc.) the light can actually burn into the screen and leave a permanent image.

Rear Projections are right there among the LCD's - some of them like Sony's SXRD models are better than flat panel LCD's.

Plasma's - in my opinion - cannot produce as radiant and vibrant a picture as well as they lack good contrast abilities.

The advantage of a rear projection over a flat panel - price wise - is that you get a bigger screen for the money.

On a 1080p display, you can sometimes see the difference in quality of the same content through a 1080i feed. (watching the same movie on a HD-DVD 1080i player and a Blu Ray 1080p player) When between the two a difference can be seen - you can only imagine what differences you'd see between 720 and 1080 material.

Most network shows are now broadcast at 1080i, so there is a lot of content now available at that resolution. Blu-Ray Discs provide you with 1080p material, and HD-DVD players currently provide up to 1080i material. With the availability of Toshiba's XA-2, HD-DVD's will also be available at 1080p.

In my opinion again - 720 is heading out the door. Making an investment at this stage - you should go with the 1080p models. If a compromise has to be made - then a 1080i model - but no lower!!!

I would get a high definition LCD TV because a rear projection TV gets screen burn the same as a plasma TV, as well as you have to watch rear projection in a dark room or the picture will not be as clear. Rear projection TV's have expencive projector globs in them, i think that you are better off with a data projector than a rear projection tv because they are cheaper, and rear projection tv's have 3 globs, a projector only has one and they both have a good picture, in fact i think that the data projector has a better picture. The only type of TV that I would get is an HD LCD TV.
