I don't understand the question - do you mean that cognitive ability is linked to vocabulary?

I don't know of a study, but it seems intuitively correct that cognition (stimulating intellectual activity) would ultimately lead to a better vocabulary. On the other hand, it could lead to better performance in the arts, especially music, or science or math, but at the same time raising your performance in any of these would also lead to an increased vocabulary.

It throws me a bit, your phrasing, " ... need for cognition ...". I know in my early years that although I was always curious about things, my parents were concerned that for a period of a few months (this was before age 5) I would not talk. My mental stimulation by physically getting into things, then putting them back together (late 1950s, not a lot of educational toys, then) was not coupled with vocabulary building.
