If you are asking about a Social Security Number then..
You can apply for a SSN if you have your work permit or your Green Card.
There are different types of SSN cards issued, depending on what grounds you need the card for. eg: For work purposes only or not valid for employment etc etc
How to obtain a SSN and what documents you need to take are listed here: http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html#how...
It also tells you all the information you need about them.

If you already have a green card, just walk into a Social Security Administration office and apply.
If you don't, but your visa status permits you to work, file Form I-765 Application for employment Authorization.
One exception to this is employment-based visas; since they are de facto work permits you only need apply for the SS#.
If your visa status doesn't permit you to work at all, you can not get a SS# at all.

My husband is a permanent resident and he has an immigrant visa. When he first arrived here and started looking for employment we realized that he would have to get a s s card before he could legally earn. It was really quite simple. We went to the local social security office and he received his new social sec card in the mail within a week.
You are required to have your premanent resident card/valid green card, or work visa in order to get one. You should also bring your passport or state ID/drivers license to verify that you are who you say you are as well as your birth certificate (english translation). If your visa status is more complicated than this I would strongly advise you to obtain a certified written copy of permission to be employed that way there will be no restrictions on you. Best of luck and don't worry, its easier than you think.

You have to work for a VISA but for some countries like Mexico its hard because they don't get lots of VISA and also because the government of Mexico does not do anything about there PESOS and there people, so the illegals that live here its not them to blame its there government. (US should be the nice country they are and give them citizenship or blame Mexico government more for they can feel pressure and then they will do something about it)

If you have a work visa or resident visa permitting you to work, you just show that to the Social Security office and they'll get you one.

After you have received your green card, you will have to wait for about five years, then pledge allegiance to the US, then you can receive a s.s.
