tire labeled "all season" means its for general use...meaning it has average traction for all weathers.
where a "mud/snow" tire is designed for grip in those conditions but not be as well as a touring tire or on dry pavement.
the mud/snow tire is a "specialty" tire where the all season is a "general" tire.
just like performance tires...they are meant for dry pavement only but stink in the snow, rain and mud, they too are a "specialty" tire.

Superior when? Mud & Snow tires are superior in Mud & Snow, but wear very quickly in warm weather, and have inferior grip on dry roads. You should really have a second set of tires for summer use. All season tires offer acceptable performance all year long.

I find that summer tires are better all year round.Oh right,this is Houston.
