"The story of a Great Flood sent by a deity or deities to destroy civilization as an act of divine retribution is a widespread theme in Greek and many other cultural myths. The stories of Noah and the ark in Genesis, Matsya in the Hindu Puranas, Deucalion in Greek mythology and Utnapishtim in the Epic of Gilgamesh are among the most familiar versions of these myths."
hey christians, you see that. different gods telling different people to survive a flood at different places than noah. HENCE, ITS A MYTH.
so if one story in the bible is a myth, what makes you think THE REST AREN'T ALL MYTHS???

to MATT I:
that's MY WHOLE POINT. i'm not arguing that there wasn't some kind of big flood or whatever. but the idea of different cultures telling the story with DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND DIFFERENT GODS AT DIFFERENT PLACES, and "adding their own flavor to it" and saying that ONE of these stories is FACT AND REAL...that's completely ridiculous. i'm sure there was a catastrophical flood back then. in fact there's evidence backing that up....but to say that ONE story of ONE god telling ONE specific person at ONE specific place IS TRUE AND REAL, when there's others saying the same??? wow i find that crazy....that you believe in one myth story.

Archeologists have not found evidence of a world-wide flood but they have found evidence of huge floods at different times in different locations. They believe the earth went through a period of flooding but it was never at the same time, therefore, not world-wide, even though the ancient people thought so. I see some creationists are trying to use other myths as proof of their's being real. Silly creationists.

There may be a germ of truth in the Flood story. Archeologists have found traces of cities that are now under the water of the Black Sea. They are postulating that earthquakes may have caused the flood that the Babylonians and Hebrews took as the Great Flood.
Not all believers take the Bible literally; some see it as a compilations of an oral tradition that ties back to several different cultures. However, the message of behavior given therein is still a good thing to follow.

the fact that there are so many different stories in so many different cultures I think helps validate the story as true. whenever you find something that is common in a variety of cultures it has to be based on something, all of those cultures wouldn't have made up the same myth off the top of their head. as the story was passed down from one generation to the next, each culture added it's own flavor to it and that is how you get the different variations, but the basic story is the same in every culture. don't you find that a little bit too coincidental?

I don't know why people are obsessed with finding his ark. According to muslims, it was not something that had to be found because it was there on Mount Judy. People used to come to it and take pieces of it as charms. Since this is not allowed in Islam, Caliph Umar used the wood of the Ark to make a mosque in Alcizre in Turkey.

Did you ever think that the story was passed down from generation to generation. After the split at Tower of Babel, the world changed, people changed, language changed. The word Noah got changed by a different language. And the story gets changed when passed down a million times. But the story Moses wrote down was the truth because it was told to him by God directly. The reason other cultures have the same story is because all people come from the same family, Noah's family.

How come the only summit above the waters was Mount Ararat since the Himalayas are way higher?
Was Noah's ark the ONLY boat on Earth? And if not...
How come those who had boats didn't figure out how to survive by fishing or something like that?
How did rodents manage to not overpopulate the ark?

Actually.. the fact that it shows up in other religions sort of proves that a great flood actually occurred. As to whether or not Noah actually built an ark to house two of each animal... that part is probably more fiction than truth.

Your logic is blind. The very fact that all these other cultures told of this occurance gives further proof that there was a world wide flood a and through the family lineage of Noah it was professed through the generations of peoples inhabiting the world.

The story is true because we find fossils on top of mountains that came from a great flood. We can also see the results of the flood. Man's longevity started decreasing.
