My husband travels weekly for work and the airlines are massively distructive with luggage as I am sure everyone knows. He is debating buying high end stuff ($300+) or buying more mid grade which needs replacement often. Does anyone have any experience with a very durable brand? What about hard shell?
Thanks!

I travel for a living. Travel Pro, E-bags, Samsonite, American tourister, All good. Travel pro is best. I bought middle grade bagsfor a while, but replacing them got way too expensive. Go ahead and spend a little extra money now -- you'll save in the longrun. Hard Shell tend to weigh a ton while empty, just get a really good 21"-22" bag. This will fit in most aircraft's overhead bins. This way, your husband will not have to check his bag. No Matter where I am going, no matter for how long, I pack the same small bag and bring it on board with me. This will also cut back on the damage the bag gets when being handled by the airline.

Hope this helps!

Hard Shell. I am a Tour Director, and fly alot! When I'm not in the air, I am on a rail, or a tour coach, and luggage and I are well acquainted. Those fellows tosing your luggage into the aircraft are not real concerned if it is fragile , wrinkled, or anything else.

Samsonite builds a resin based hard shell case that is pretty reasonable, weight isn't a real issue, and darn near indestructible. I have had mine for over twenty years and it still keeps on traveling (it just got back from Vietnam with my Dad in tow).

They now come in a variety of colors and sizes.

If all he is doing are two or three day trips the answer Lacy B gave you works great! Don't check it if you don't have to.

My husband has been traveling internationally for the last 3 years. When he first began traveling we had kind of middle of the road luggage which lasted about 2 months. We invested in several pieces of Samsonite fabric (soft-sided) pieces and they are still in use. The edges are showing wear but there are no broken zippers, ripped seams, or broken handles/pulls. I have been very, very pleased. We purchased them at Kohls, which often offers Samsonite at 50% off. It's a little older style but they carried our "line" for over 2 years so we could add pieces as needed. The problem with cheaper luggage is the frame and hardware- things you don't see. I just can not say how pleased I am with our investment in Samsonite. Good luck with your decision.

Whatever luggage you decide to purchase, just remember 1 very important tip!! If the luggage has a built in lock, make sure that it has the red TSA approved symbol. If it doesn't, and the luggage has to be inspected, there's only 1 way to get past that lock.......break it! Just always remember to use only TSA approved locks...you can purchase them at any store these days...Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc.

I would just buy cheap and renew often, hard shell weighs a ton and depending on amount in suitcase, may cause an excess baggage charge. Your lugguge is gonna be damaged whether it costs £15 or £500

Tumi luggage I have found is the best - I travel quite a bit and have that as my luggage - you spend a little bit more but its worth it!
