Here is what Sura 4:34-35 says in English:
"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because God has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore, the righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in (the husband's) absence what God would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance) for God is Most High, Great, (above you all).
If ye fear a breach between them twain, appoint (two) arbiters, one from his family, and the other from hers. If they seek to set things aright, God will cause their reconciliation, for God hath full knowledge and is aquainted with all things."
As a Christian who has lived among the Muslims, I have never witnessed or heard of any "beatings" within our Islamic family or friends in over 40 years of marriage, and verse 34 indicates such steps are to be taken only in the case of very serious violations. In almost all things, the Quran is actually much more mild than laws of the Old Testament and much more fair. It gives women rights even women in the West didn't have until 100 years ago.
Culturally, men and women have had historical difficulty, even in the West. Some Muslim men have abused their rights, and the same can be said of Western men. Did you know that the English expression "rule of thumb" originated from English law which stated that a man cannot beat his wife with a stick which is thicker than his thumb?

i don't think the Quran says that . i don't think any religion can develop if it treats it member like dogs. people treat because of who they are. although i do think
the fundamental Islams do treat its women like trash in the name of Ali.
but i do know many Islam women. from my western view they seemed to be condition but that is not bad thing.
we just think differently.
And i know muslim men and most just like thier western counterparts love and cherish thier family.
i think if you view the quran and its people the way you poised your question then you are , your worst enemy.

The Quran gives no more advantage to men over women than the Bible which states "a woman should not speak while in church"

Well the beating should be light and i think its fair enough to keep a woman fair to the relationship, even in christainity there is punishment for the woman who cheats....
No islam doesn't give men advantage over women, it has given those rights to women 1400 years back which modern civilization have given them now
here is a small list !!
Following are some rights, which Muslim women have!
1. The RIGHT and duty to acquire education.
2. The RIGHT to have her own independent property.
3. The RIGHT to work [job or business] to earn money, which she keeps it.
4. The RIGHT to equal reward for equal deed and/or work.
5. The RIGHT to express her opinion.
6. The RIGHT to argue and/or advocate her cause or opinion to be heard.
7. The RIGHT to vote since 1,421 years.
8. The RIGHT to provisions from her husband for all her needs and more.
9. The RIGHT to negotiate marriage terms of her choice.
10.The RIGHT to obtain divorce from her husband, even on the grounds that she simply don't like him. In Islaam divorce is suppose to be last resort.
11.The RIGHT to keep all her own money. [She is not responsible for maintenance of family].
12.The RIGHT to get sexual satisfaction from her husband.
13.The RIGHT to get custody of her children in case of divorce [unless she is unable to raise them for valid reasons]
14.The RIGHT to choose husband of her choice.
15.The RIGHT to refuse a proposed and/or arranged marriage.
16. The RIGHT to re-marry after divorce or after becoming widow.
EXEMPTIONS GIVEN TO WOMEN IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCE.
Women are exempt from:
a.. Fasting when they are pregnant or nursing or menstruating,
b.. Praying when menstruating or bleeding after childbirth,
c.. The obligation to attend congregational prayers in the mosque on Fridays.
d.. They are not obliged to take part as soldiers in the defense of Islam, although they are not forbidden to do so.
But under normal circumstances they are allowed to do all the things that men do.
- Even when they are menstruating, on special days, like the two Eid festivals, they are still allowed to come to the Eid prayers, and menstruating women can take part in most of the actions of the Hajj pilgrimage.
Islamic laws does not requires that women should confine themselves to household duties.
Muslim women have [and are as well] headed Islamic provinces [and states as well], like Arwa bint Ahmad, who served as governor of Yemen under the Fatimid Khalifahs in the late fifth and early sixth century.
If somewhere woman is not treated well, thats cultural not religious and infact its because of the ignorance from the religion that they don't know woman rights....But believe me muslim men keep their wives like jewel !!!

you mean unlike the bible which deems it ok to sell your daughter into slavery?
there is nothing wrong with Islam except that people think it is this horrible religion - it is no worse than any of the other formal religions out there - leave it alone!
