I agree with above, but it shold be noted that the actual military role the Navy undertakes will change over time.

During the Cold War (That technically counts up until 1991?) the Royal Navy was meant to be a defensive, submarine-hunting navy, but that's all over now. Now the Navy is becoming a full 'blue water' fleet to operate in missions worldwide, from defensive stations in the Falklands to more active roles in the gulf. Being the second-largest Navy in the world (90 or so ships, I got from wikipedia) the Royal Navy is pretty capable of fullfilling this role.

same as the US Navy. protect the shores of the home country, protect the trade lanes, and project power as needed.
