Beware of individuals who tell you about good ownership experiences. They may have had the only good one! If in the UK go to the public library and look in Which? magazine at the statistics. There is info about ownership costs too. 'What Car' magazine is good for all info except reliability statistics.
If I had to give a personal opinion I would say honda is out on price. This leaves Maxda, Skoda and Toyota as front runners. But consider depreciation, servicing costs etc too. This might give Skoda the edge. There are cheaper alternatives, but one of these secondhand actually works out cheaper owing to retained values.

My (personal) problem with the Corolla is size --
it's a Clown Car.
I'd put a few extra bucks into a roomier, used Toyota Camry.
