One of my 2 german sheperds just passed away. He was already old, and I am very sad by it. I do have another dog left, and I have heard that sometimes they can get sick because they are sad and depressed.

You should worry a lot about your remaining dogs grieving. I had a lab and her pal, an Afghan Hound passed away. She would not eat for over a week, and just layed on the kitchen floor. I played with her, and did all the 'normal' things one would think of to do. Finally, I went to our local shelter, and picked up a young collie mix pup. Well, within a day or two, my Lab was on her feet, playing again, eating again, and back to her old self. I never would have believed a dog could get that 'sad', but I saw it first hand. Your dog may not suffer as severe, but watch him/her closely, and don't ignore the signs. If your dog begins to lose weight from not eating, or is totally uninterested in anything, seek a vets help, and if you want to open your home and heart to a new dog, ... now would be the time. Condolences on the loss of your shepherd... he'll be waiting for you over the rainbow bridge.

I am so sorry to hear that but honestly, Yes the other german shepherd can and prob will be VERY depressed. Depending on how old the dog is, if it is a puppy, then he may not be as depressed as an Adult dog. He will prob stop eating have diarrea and in some cases, if the dog died in your home, the dog may lay in the spot. It happened to my neighbors dog. If you are looking to get another companion for him/her I would get one as soon as possible to ease the loss of the pet. Its a hard time, but keep your pet very occupied, Take him/her to dog parks and get him/her around as many other dogs a possible. Hope it helps

Just like people dogs get depressed when they lose there buddy. My vet told me once that they need closer and he recommends owners take their dog to the grave site and just let him/her lay there for a bit. He swears it works. When my grandpa died, his dog laid beside of him while when were waiting for the ambulance to tak him to the funeral home. He did OK, sad for a couple of days, ate less, but started to pick back up. Getting another dog might work and then again it might not. I would take my dog somewhere where there are other dogs around for him to socialize with . See how he/she reacts with them. When you two are ready then get a new dog if that's what you want. You can even see if your humane society has a foster program and foster a dog for a while. Sorry about your lose, good luck.

it is true, just watch out for him. If he doesnt eat and is laying around the house then more than likey he is depressed. Talk to the vet about it, you may not want to rush in and get another one quite yet. Let him grieve, if you hurry into getting another he may resent the new one. Hope this was helpful! but keep him busy like take him to the park or on a walk, just so that he's not stuck at home thinking about his loss.

Awww so sorry to hear that. When my dad's lab passed away their other dog looked so lost and depressed and was soooooo sad, he looked so pitiful. We ended up getting another lab later on maybe a year later and they became the best of pals, but we just created a vicious cycle, when that lab passed away their new one got depressed and looked like she just lost all meaning to life so and looked so lost, but now she has another buddy about the same age as her, it is really hard when they pass away, they are still thought of and no new dog replaces them.

I am sorry to hear of your loss, your other dog will be sad and a very good chance it will get depressed.another dog will help solve the problem, but get another adult, the older one may hurt a puppy or become very bitter towards it. You should also speak to your Vet,they will steer you in the right direction.
