I truly believe that the only one that can judge a cop is another cop. No one I mean no one knows what its like to be a cop. except a another cop. I spent 20 years on the street and Good and bad is a matter of opinion when it comes to non police persons usually based on experience like the question ask-er Only people that have had run ins with the police complain and the ones that have had a good experience don't comment.

I seperate them into different categories. Unfortunately I see more of #'s 2&3 than anything else.
#1 Honest hardworking cops who are proud of what they do
#2 Arrogant, condescending, controlling jerks who are proud of being "in charge"
#3 Lying manipulators and crooks who should have no pride at all.
Disclaimer for those that believe if you don't like cops that you must be a criminal; I'm not now nor have I ever been in trouble with the law. I just don't wear rose colored glasses/.

As an officer for over thirty years, I'm asked or hear this question asked often!
As in ANY profession, there are always going to be bad, good, better, and best!
The difference is what we do that defines us!
I decided upon this profession because I have a genuine desire to helps those who can't help themselves.
The can't count the times I've assisted stranded motorists, took a drug dealer off the street who is selling poisons to unsuspecting victims, or arrested those who steal from you where you've worked hard to get the "fruits of your efforts!"
Many think officers have an "attitude" that we're better or above others! We DO have to maintain the highest standard of honesty and integrity. But those times we've been accused of rudeness is often a misconception of being "cautious!"
We all know we're going to have an "eventual demise," however, as an officer, I, like anyone else, want to delay that "demise" for as long as I can.
There are so many people we deal with on a daily basis that are good, bad, and indifferent. It's the ones that are not your normal "nice person" that we deal with most often. So we are more prepared for that type person than the average good person who makes an occasional error.
We're on our guard and yet we appear to be mean....for that I can understand some thinking as they do. But, please, understand, MOST officers are extremely good and professional who have only the public safety of their communities first and foremost on their minds!
Best wishes!

Well Garrett, I can't say that I am a fan of yours or not because I don't know you do I?
Good or bad is a broad statement. Are doctors good or bad?
Janitors? Dentists? Truck drivers? Men? Women? The range in quality of persons on the job is huge, just like it would be in any proffession.
I do my job as fairly and as well as I can everyday and it is true that I do make some people unhappy by arresting them or writing tickets. I don't do the job to be popular. I do it to earn money to support my family and to keep my community safe.

There are good cops and bad cops, I work with cops from time to time I work in loss prevention field. Some of my friends are cops. Cops need to be tough and vulgar because they deal with a lot of crazy stuff from day to day. We live in such a dangerous world cops need to always be cautious. Thats why they swear a lot because people need to realize that there the law and in control, some do abuse there powers.

I never understand why people say "the ones asking this question and think cops are bad...are the ones committing the crimes"
cops are pigs...plain and simple...oink oink.
I get pulled over all the time for how I look...plain and simple..and im white. I get harrassed, stopped for wearing a trucker hat with profanity on it...just dumb *** ****.
But I realized its freedom of speech...they cant touch you...so enjoy it!

They are just human beings like the rest of us but like in all walks of life; there are always good and bad people.
If you believe they are bad then that means you've spent your life doing stupid things (such as breaking laws) and they've caught you at it. Remember, they're only doing their job.
If you believe they are good, then that means you know right from wrong and have not broken any laws.
Story; a friend of one of my friends spent his teenage and early adulthood years always getting into trouble. He was always being arrested and going to jail. It took him until he was 30 to realize what he had been doing was drawing attention to himself because he just didn't seem to know how to stay out of trouble.
He now is married, a couple of kids, a good job and has not done anything stupid. He looks back on this 'troubled years' and admits to his stupidity and knows there was no one to blame but himself (he was also drinking a lot and doing drugs). Now, he wished he knew then what he knows now and he would have never done what he did.
I have a relative who is in law enforcement and I'm sure there are stupid law breaking people out there who think he's a bad person but he's really not. He's just doing his job. He is married, has a family, involved in his children's education, goes to college part-time, in the reserves and spends a lot of quality time with his family. We all think the world of him - he's just a great person who has chosen a career he has passion in and to make our community safer place for us all.

Some cops are great, and some aren't. It's the way of all people. Not just cops.

The ones I have ran into have been nothing but lying, crooked, conniving b's. I will never ever put my faith in a cop. for the people who have said it's the people they interact with...... you are idiots. I do not have a record of any kind. We had a check stolen by a mexican my husband works with. We did interviews, hand writing analyzes, we gave that cop everything she needed or wanted. She turned it around on my husband and he got arrested. Now, we have to fight her and we are going to every step of the way!

If you go on vacation and leave your house. The last person you want to tell that your house is vacant is a cop. There are good cops too.
